Aims & Objectives

  • Learn through seven teaching modules over nine weeks, two of which are practical, using Microsoft Word.
  • Learn about the important elements that make up a professional looking book-block, and how to create your own in Microsoft Word.
  • Learn about the interactive elements of an e-book and which formats are essential.
  • Learn about the importance of cover design and how to spot the professional from the amateur.
  • Gain an understanding of how to use social media and author websites to promote your book, and how to set up an author website in a few easy steps.

Who should take this course?

  • Somebody who is thinking of writing a book, or is in the process of writing or has written a book, and is considering self-publishing.
  • Somebody who has already self-published but wants to do more of the preparation themselves, or improve their skills as a self-publishing author.

Face to Face

This course runs locally in Norfolk for two hours a week, over a nine-week period, including two practical weeks using Microsoft Office. There will be opportunities for group discussion and activities, with guidance notes and full support from the facilitator.

Online

The online course is accessible every day of the week and set up slightly differently to the face to face course. The facilitator will be online live for two hours a week, over a nine-week period, with videos and written material to support the course. Group discussion will be encouraged via the virtual learning environment (VLE) forum, and full support from the facilitator.

Course Modules

The course is broken down into the following modules:

Module One Discovering the benefits of self-publishing. This module explores the benefits of self-publishing, looking at the self-publishing revolution.
Module Two Which self-publishing platform should I use? This module explores the different platforms available to self-publishers, and looks at the pros and cons of those platforms, as well as the benefits of ISBNs.
Module Three What makes up a professional book-block? This module breaks down the different elements that make up a professional book-block, and what considerations need to be made in regard to genre. It also explores publisher’s guidelines and how to follow them when preparing your book-block.
Practical Week Putting together a book-block. This week is a practical teaching week, implementing the elements learned in Module Three on your own manuscript (or a mock script provided by ListenThinkGrow). There will be full facilitator support.
Module Four How to design a fully functioning e-book. This module looks at the restrictions and elements that make up a fully functioning e-book, as well as the different formats you may wish to consider when publishing your book.
Practical Week Putting together an e-book. This week is a practical teaching week, implementing the elements learned in Module Four on your own manuscript (or a mock script provided by ListenThinkGrow). There will be full facilitator support.
Module Five All about cover design. This module looks at the way a professional cover is designed, from the image(s) chosen, to the gridding and layout, and the importance of good typography. It also explores the tell-tale signs which distinguish a professional cover designer from a homemade one.
Module Six Preparing for publication. This module explores the final stages of preparation required at the publication stage. You will discuss the different pricing and royalty options, guidance on book launches, and using social media for marketing purposes.
Module Seven Author websites and the soft sell. Finally, this module looks at the development of author websites, something essential for any author. It explores the easiest routes to developing your own website and the essentials to make it work for you.
